Hi, I'm Wouter.
I create ceramics that embrace imperfection and the traces of time. My hands follow the subtle guidance of the clay, shaping forms that emerge naturally. Each touch leaves a delicate trace, every curve and indentation a record of gesture and intention, part of a quiet dialogue between maker and material.
Transience runs through my work. I am drawn to the slow passage of time—how it softens, erodes, and layers subtle marks into matter. This perspective reminds us of our brief presence in an immense universe. My objects appear ancient, as if they have lain underground for centuries before being unearthed. Earthy browns, muted greens, and soft grays mingle with weathered textures, creating surfaces that invite close inspection. Tiny pits, subtle striations, and delicate fractures speak of erosion, fragility, and endurance, capturing the whisper of time itself.
My work moves between throwing and building techniques, creating a conversation between intention, chance, and the natural tendencies of the clay. Wheel-thrown forms often serve as a starting point, then I reshape, carve, or adjust them until balance emerges. Experimentation is central: I often use carriers that burn away during firing, leaving irregularities, cavities, and textures that could never be fully planned. Each firing becomes a moment of discovery, where heat, gravity, and material interact to produce forms that carry their own logic, history, and energy.
Chinese thought deepens this approach. Wu Xing invites me to see work as moving through evolving phases rather than fixed states. Dao encourages following the material’s natural course, and Tao teaches working from alignment rather than control. These principles guide not only how I shape the clay, but also the rhythm, proportions, and presence of each piece, connecting it to the larger flow of change, balance, and time.
My ceramic installations are accompanied by a carefully curated soundtrack that interacts with texture, shape, and space. Sounds echo the surfaces and edges of the work, creating a layered dialogue where intention meets chance. Viewers can sense the slow, meditative rhythm of time embedded in each object, and feel its subtle energy through both sight and sound.

I welcome you to reach out via the form below and start our creative journey together!
